“Vampire Therapy”

Dr. Ana Maria Oproiu, Specialist in Aesthetic-Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Associate Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery of UMF Carol Davila

Dr. Ana Maria Oproiu, what can you tell us about regenerative therapies and what are the most common techniques?

The skin is a mirror of the patient’s age and health. It is subjected daily to the aggressions of internal and external factors. Regenerative therapies were introduced into medical practice in the early 1960s and cover a wide range of specialties. The most commonly used in the practice of plastic surgery is vampire therapy – plasma therapy enriched with platelets, therapy that uses the body’s ability to regenerate.

How is this “plasma treatment” procedure performed in practice?

Plasma treatment is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. PRP therapy involves collecting the blood in special tubes and centrifuging it in centrifuges set according to the time and number of rotations to obtain the enriched plasma. Once the plasma is obtained, it is injected into the patient’s dermis. Although plasma is the richest mesococktail and has no expiration time, it should still take into account the time elapsed from blood collection to the introduction of plasma, while it should not exceed 30 minutes.

The patient is cleansed, the anesthetic cream is applied, the blood is collected after 15 minutes in the special tubes, the tubes are inserted in the centrifuge and the blood is centrifuged. After obtaining the plasma, the anesthetic cream is removed and the plasma is enriched in the dermis. After the procedure, a soothing cream is applied. Do not apply cold compresses or ice to the injected skin so as not to block the inflammatory processes that begin to occur after plasma injection, with the appearance of the network and neocolagen.

What are the conditions that can be treated with PRP therapy?

Vampire therapy can be used in various skin conditions, gynecological conditions or joint conditions.

Is it necessary to combine it with other forms of treatment?

Plasma therapy may be used alone or in combination with other treatments. May be associated with other mesotherapy injections, vitamin injections, hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin (7 days after PRP injection), concomitant administration of wires, IPL, microneedling, or combination with surgery.

We know that prevention is better than treating any condition. What skin conditions can prevent PRP treatment?

By stimulating collagen and forming new blood vessels, PRP is used successfully in the prevention of skin aging, and can be used from the face to the neck, décolleté and back of the hand.

Is it necessary to have several meetings between the doctor and the patient or is a single session enough?

A minimum of 4 serial sessions is required to obtain an optimal result. It is known that the survival time of platelets is 7-10 days, after which they are degraded in the spleen. So the 4 sessions must be held at an interval of 7-10 days to obtain an optimal result. Repeat sessions can be done after 6-12 months.

In the case of patients with alopecia, at what time is the treatment performed to get results?

In patients with alopecia the results are visible after the first group of injections; 6-8 plasma sessions are required at the same time. Good results are obtained in patients who will undergo a hair transplant and will have their skin prepared by vampire therapy. After performing the hair transplant, another 2-3 plasma sessions will be performed to form the neovascularization responsible for the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles.

Who is the ideal candidate for PRP therapy? Can Adolescents Treat Juvenile Acne?

PRP therapy does not take into account age or gender, it can be addressed to any patient. Yes, they can.

How soon one can notice improvements after PRP treatment?

The results are seen immediately after the first injection, the skin is more hydrated, the turgor is better, even the color of the skin is improved.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with therapy?
Vampire therapy is a safe procedure in which no risks have been reported in the literature, the only associated side effects could be considered the more common bruising in patients using anticoagulants.

What are the pre and post-treatment recommendations?

Rigorous hygiene is recommended both before and after treatment. After treatment, it is recommended not to expose yourself to the sun, do not exercise or sit in the dust.

What is your experience with this type of therapy and what are the benefits you have seen in patients who have had this method of treatment?

I have extensive experience in the use of plasma in tissue regeneration, in the treatment of alopecia or in association with gynecologists in the treatment of genital diseases. The results were very good both at the level of the skin and in the amelioration of the diseases of the genital sphere.

How long does a meeting last?

From the time the patient enters the office until the end of the procedure, the allotted time should not exceed one hour.

Does it hurts?

Since it is done under local anesthesia, the pain depends on the threshold of each patient. I have patients in whom even the treatment for alopecia in the scalp is done without local anesthesia, not because I would not have anesthetic cream, but because the patients ask for it.

How long does the effect of PRP therapy last?

It is a cumulative effect, which will be maintained once the treatment is maintained.

What recommendations for a healthy life can you give us that can prolong the effect of PRP?

Beware of the harmful effects of smoking, external factors and food.
